What is New Media

How can we describe "New Media?" I'll start with a more factual definition. If we define it in terms of old media vs new media, we can begin by saying media sources such as magazines, newspapers, radio, television, encyclopedias, can be categorized under "old" media, while "new" media is a fusion of the two which has resulted in a computer/web based form of communication.

What do I mean by this? forms of new media include: online- newpapers, online radio, email, chat rooms, instant messaging, podcasts (online audio or video files ex, interviews), wikis (online encyclopedia), blogs, social networks (facebook), media sharing, social book marking (web based sharing bookmarks).
In order for a technology to be considered "new" it must have all the 5 C's: Communication, collaboration, community, creativity and convergence. In essence I would say new media is the new electronic web based lifestyle where we can keep in touch with our friends and family through social networks, webcam chatting, share and listen to music with out having to turn on the stereo, keep up with the latest news without having to read a newspaper or even turn on the TV, in essence a technological community bringing everyone together in a world of massive geographic divisions.
